Between tradition and fashion

Today, almost all modern martial arts styles claim to be effective, adaptable, and realistic.
In practice, many are nothing more than a reflection of the trends of their time, change the packaging, but don't solve the central problem.

The pattern repeats itself, to appear more complete, many systems simply add a bit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai to their training... But without a deep technical adaptation.
The result? They bring the same defects that already exist in competitive practices into their own systems, and still believe they have solved the problem.

The problem with mixing competition with real combat training

Some schools, to increase dynamism, incorporate internal competitions.
Initially, the idea seems good, to test reflexes, create challenges, and motivate.
But in the medium and long term, competition inevitably changes the objective of training and creates its own distortions.

I'm not against competition, on the contrary, I think it can be extremely useful, but only when it's separate and inserted into specific combat sports.
In a system designed for real combat, competition as a central part almost always leads to habits that, outside the mat or ring, can be costly.

The mistake of eliminating unproven techniques

Another common extreme is to completely remove techniques that are not applicable in competition, such as certain locks and throws from Aikido.
Many ridicule these techniques because they do not understand their technical subtlety or their context of application.

Of course, you have to be careful, training only this type of movement, without real contact, leads to the risk of mysticism and illusion.
But just because they aren't used in intense sparring doesn't mean they aren't usable in a real-life situation.

I can speak from experience, I have benefited from this type of work in multiple aggression situations, especially in controlling the center, something that Aikido taught me in a unique way.
I'm not sharing this to create hero stories (some use this kind of rhetoric to mislead students), but because it's part of my journey and influences my approach to training. That's why I avoid talking about it too much in general, but I also can't pretend it never happened...

The risk of extremes

The truth is that extremes, whether 100% competition or 100% choreographed training, always create dangerous limitations.
Human beings, guided by ego and the need for approval, tend to imitate what is fashionable instead of seeking real progress.
They want applause, likes and students… But not necessarily effectiveness and personal growth.

Most, fortunately, will never be attacked, so you can play around with less functional approaches without major consequences.
But for me, martial practice is a search for truth.
And this quest doesn't begin with deception, neither of others nor of oneself. Knowing that those who deceive in one way will naturally deceive in many ways. It becomes natural. And this will impact any life goal. We must act in accordance with our initial goals, honestly.

The balance of the Mentadorio

The Mentadorio was born from this observation, taking advantage of the best of each approach and discarding what is not useful.

- From tradition, precision, body awareness, technical discipline.
- From modern combat, adaptability, realism, pressure management.

And we bring this together in a simple and fluid way, without an excess of useless rules, without limiting rigidity and without competitive biases when the objective is real effectiveness.

Adapted and realistic training

At Mentadorio, each student's training is tailored to their physical condition, goals and learning pace.
The focus is that each reflex be functional and that the strategy makes sense both in training and in a real situation.

Train in Linda-a-Velha or online (to be completed with internships.)

In our space in Linda-a-Velha (Oeiras), you will find:

Personalized attention.
Modern methods that respect martial philosophy.
A serious environment, without egos or toxic competition. (The first class is free)

And if you cannot always be present, the Online Mentadorio Academy ensures that you continue to evolve from home.

Conclusion

Neither too closed systems, nor unfiltered combat.
The Mentadorio is the modern synthesis of martial arts: effective, simple, and adaptable.
If you want to train in a smart and balanced way, you are invited to try.

Many people think that martial arts after the age of 30 (or much more) are not for them. We hear excuses every day: "I'm already old," "I don't have flexibility," "it's for the younger ones." But the truth is different: if after the age of 30 you are looking for something more solid than just "exercise," martial arts can be exactly what you are missing.

The Myth of Age in Martial Arts

In youth, many train for fashion or energy. After 30 (40, 50, or 60), the perspective changes: it is no longer about competing with others, but finding a workout that makes sense for the body and the mind.

- You don't need to jump like an acrobat.

- You don't need to fight like a professional athlete.

- You do need to train in a realistic, intelligent, and adaptable manner.

This is where many people get it wrong: they believe that age is a barrier when, in fact, it is just a matter of adjusting the path.

Fitness and Martial Arts After 30

Yes, you can and should do fitness after 30. The secret lies in managing intensity and understanding that the body needs recovery and progression. In martial arts, this means:

- Working on physical fitness without exaggeration.

- Improving flexibility and not just brute strength.

- Using technical training as a way to keep the body active and healthy.

The mistake is not doing fitness or intense training after 30, but rather trying to train as if you were 18 without respecting your body's signals.

What you are really looking for after 30 (or 40, 50…)

If you are looking for martial arts at this stage of life, it's probably not just physical exercise. It's also:

- Health and longevity: training without self-destruction.

- True confidence: knowing you can defend yourself seriously, not just in theory.

- Mental discipline: managing stress, maintaining focus, and clarity in daily life.

- Purpose: feeling that training has purpose, that it's not just empty effort.

The body changes, but the mind grows

After 30 or 40, the body no longer recovers like it did at 18. But you gain something even more important: maturity.

- Knowing how to listen better.

- Noticing details that you previously overlooked.

- You can understand that consistency is worth more than uncontrolled intensity.

The right training doesn't limit you by age but uses your life experience as an advantage.

Where to train correctly

It's not about seeking the perfect martial art, but rather a method that respects reality. At Mentadorio, we believe that martial arts have no age limit, but rather a purpose: training for real life, without illusions.

If you are over 30 or much older, and you want to start (or restart) training seriously, look for a Fonte (A source - Martial Arts Academy) Mentadorio near you, or if there isn't one, join our Online Academy and discover an adapted training path to reality, without falling for passing fads.

After 30, 40, or 50, training isn't about proving anything to others; it's about evolving every day.

For many years, I practiced and taught Jeet Kune Do (JKD). I always admired Bruce Lee's philosophy: simplicity, efficiency, adaptability. But over time, I started feeling a weight.

The JKD that people were asking for wasn't the JKD that I believed in. It was a JKD stuck in the past... Or so open and confused that it had lost its essence.

Some students came just for the name JKD. Others for Kali (Eskrima), which also covers the weapon aspect, because Bruce Lee didn't have time to develop everything before passing away.

Some wanted a diploma to be able to say they had JKD, even if they didn't really care if my training actually served them. And I, to respond to this demand, ended up sometimes teaching a pale and soulless version of what I believed in.

As Bruce Lee wrote in his own book (Tao of Jeet Kune Do):

“If the name becomes a problem, change the name..”

That's exactly what I did.

To Free Myself from Limitations

Throughout my years of martial arts and personal defense training, I moved away from Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Gung Fu (the Kung Fu that serves as the basis for JKD), not out of disrespect, but because I wanted to evolve.

The JKD that I was practicing no longer fit into a box. And I didn't want to continue being a prisoner of a label.

With Mentadorio, I was able to:

Maintain the simplicity and efficiency that I had always admired in JKD,

Trim away what was unnecessary,

Adapt the training to each student,

Create something truly Portuguese, with roots in Asian martial arts but completely modern.

Why Mentadorio is More Adaptable

The Mentadorio system is not a collection of techniques pasted one on top of the other. It is a living system, designed for:

Adults with little time but a real desire to learn,

People who want to progress quickly without getting lost in useless theory,

Here we don't train for belts, we train to be truly better. Keeping for the most motivated the possibility of becoming a Mentor (Instructor).

Linda-a-Velha, Oeiras, a Different Training Space

At my academy in Linda-a-Velha,

You can train with me and receive direct attention.

If you live in Oeiras, Lisbon, or the surrounding areas, here you will find a space where:

The technique is adapted to your body and pace,

The training is serious, but accessible,

The philosophy is clear: functionality above all.

In-Person Training and Online Academy

If you cannot always come to the club (if you live far away or don't have enough schedule flexibility), you can continue training through the Mentadorio Online Academy:

Step-by-step explanatory videos,

Programs adapted to your level.

Access the Online Academy

Conclusion

JKD taught me a lot, but Mentadorio is the result of years of training, reflection, and real-life experience.

If you are looking for effective, simple, and personalized training, come experience Mentadorio in Linda-a-Velha (Oeiras, Lisbon, Portugal).

It's not just a style. It's a way of training, and of thinking. If you live far from a Mentadorio Fonte (Source), use the Online Academy, you can always complete stages in other cities in Portugal. If you have any doubts, feel free to reach out.

There is something that many martial arts practitioners often forget: the existence of different types of combat.

Muitos pensam que só existem duas fases: combate ou não-combate.

Thinking this way is a mistake. There are several situations that radically change the dangers to avoid and the actions to take.

Various phases of combat

For example, we have competitive fighting (which can still vary greatly depending on the rules of each tournament).

We have the so-called ritual combat, which may arise on a night out, in a situation where someone wants to simply show who is the strongest.

And we have survival combat, where one person fights until death... (war situations, psychological disturbances, attempted homicides, etc.)

The problem is that many practitioners mix all these situations, thinking that a fight is always a fight, period.

But the techniques used will be different.

Context

The way of training, managing physical condition, and especially the psychological approach to the situation... Everything changes according to the context.

When we enter a confrontation phase, it is essential to identify the type of fight we are in as quickly as possible: will it be a ritual of ego? Or something much more dangerous?

In a survival situation, sometimes it's the one who is willing to go further... earlier.

That's why, in front of a crazy person, often the best option is to flee. (Which I recommend in general.)

On the psychological side, those who prepare for the long term in a coherent way for the right type of fight will have better chances of survival (in a real confrontation) or winning in a competition.

That's why modalities like MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offer much more effective technical and physical bases than many self-defense modalities that avoid real sparring, as happens in many clubs of Krav Maga, Systema, or Pencak Silat...

In my personal search for a more coherent and adapted realism to the street and survival, I studied several disciplines until I focused on Jeet Kune Do, before creating my own martial synthesis: the Mentadorio.

A modern path, fluid, and practical way, for those looking for an effective martial art, with a philosophy of self-development.

We live in an era where many associate strength with brutality, or effectiveness with ugly and awkward movements. But this vision is limited.

True effectiveness is not dirty or chaotic. It is clean. Clear. And even beautiful.

When a movement is efficient, it is also fluid.

When a body is well-trained, it does not waste energy.

And this economy, this naturalness, is what gives real beauty to the gesture.

The Illusion of Complicated Movement.

The error is not in the beauty of the movement.

The error is in complicating for ego.

Training movements that only work in artificial contexts, where everything is in favor.

A beautiful technique does not need to be sophisticated.

A simple saber thrust, well executed, is fatal and hypnotic.

A simple kick, given with weight and precision, is more efficient (and more beautiful) than a thousand poorly executed acrobatics.

Refined Simplicity.

Being simple is not being basic.

Being simple is being refined.

Refine a gesture until it becomes natural.

Clear unnecessary tensions.

Reach that point where the body moves without apparent effort.

This simplicity, the fruit of conscious training, is what gives the practitioner true freedom of action.

It's not about dirty tricks. It's about depth.

There are those who confuse effectiveness with dirty play.

With random blows, with brutality.

That's the easy way out.

But easy is not equal to efficient.

The practitioner who dedicates himself to understanding the body, posture, distance, and reading the opponent quickly realizes that the most effective path is also the most elegant.

Those who see from the outside may not even understand what happened.

But those who know, know.

Simplicity is invisible to those who are not ready

Many neophytes do not perceive the depth of a simple gesture.

They think that only flashy movements are effective.

But in real combat, it's subtlety that makes the difference.

A small angle adjustment.

A relaxation at the right moment.

A precise step.

It is at this level that simplicity reveals its true strength.
